5 tips for today’s 20-somethings #blindpost

Mark Cuban gave advice to 20-somethings recently via Business Insider. This sounded like a great #blindpost opportunity. Per the #blindpost rules, I took the headline and wrote my interpretation of it, without reading the article itself.

To all the 20-somethings out there, here are my 5 tips for success:

1. Learn to sell.

No matter what job you end up taking, or really, whatever you end up doing in any aspect of your life, knowing how to sell will help you. As an example, if you want to start your own company one day, get a job in sales for a company that does something similar to what your future startup would do. Learning how to sell that product/service will help you tremendously.

2. Gain confidence in public speaking.

Being able to speak in public will give you an advantage in so many areas of your life. Sure, you’ll be able to give the toast at your sister’s wedding or speak at a conference in your industry, but you’ll also be better equipped to give a presentation to your boss or potential investors. More reasons why public speaking is an incredibly important skill.

3. Get inspired to give back.

It took me far too long in life to realize the benefits of giving back to my community. It will help you in every facet of your life, guaranteed. Read this post by Joe to get you headed in the right direction.

4. Find yourself a mentor (or two).

Mentorship is a topic I write about on this blog a lot. I had mentors when I was 20, and I have mentors now that I’m almost 40. You might actually find one or two on the Advice For Good site (if you’re willing to give #3 on this list a chance).

5. Put in the time.

I’ve never worked harder in my life than I did when I was in my 20’s. Sure, I work smarter now, but when I was younger no one was going to outwork me. There are a lot of young people today that have perhaps more confidence than they should, and expect certain things to be handed to them. Don’t fall into that trap! The world rewards hard, persistent work. Trust me.
